Literally anyone can be a memoir writer. Once viewed upon as the domain of people in their twilight years, more and more people are writing their story.

What do you need to write a memoir? A memoir is a personal story so all you need is something interesting that has happened to you; something that compels you to sit down and write about it. Writing a story is hard work so it needs to be important enough and fascinating enough, to keep you motivated to continue putting pen to paper.

Why Write Your Story?

Some people write because they have something they want to tell the world. They want their personal story to be published and read by millions. Others simply want to put their story down on paper, they may not even share it with anyone else, or if they do it may only be with a select few.

Perhaps you think your story could help others; perhaps you've experienced something and what you've learnt could really aid others in the same situation. Perhaps it therapeutic. Sometimes writing about something can help us deal with it better.

What ever the driver these are all perfectly good reasons to write your story. Getting published doesn't have to be the driver for every writer.

Has It Been Written About Before?

It's very possible that it has, but that doesn't necessilarily have to deter you. Could you write about it in a new and interesting way? Perhaps you have an interesting take on the subject or a perspective not explored before.

If you want to publish your story then you'll need to do your research and understand what is our there on the market. If it's been written about many times before and you don't have anything new to offer then it's unlikely you'll make the bestseller list.

Have You Been Through an Experience That Others Could Learn From?

Perhaps it was a major life changing event, or something that you slowly realised over a long period of time. Are others interested in what you've been through? If so that's great material for you to write about. Talk to friends and family and gauge their interest in your ideas.

Ideas for Memoirs

We can't all be the first person to walk on the moon but we all have important experiences and moments in our lives where we discover something.

Some ideas for memoirs might be:

  • career experiences (such as the memoirs of politicans, movie stars and successful business people)
  • coping with traumas and hardships (such as health, poverty, victims of crime)
  • parenting and raising families
  • travel experiences
  • relationships
  • any adventure
  • life in general
  • something special or unusual

The list is endless, but what it does aim to highlight is that anything is worthy of becoming a story, if the author can bring it to life and make it an enjoyable and interesting read.

Take the time to decide what it is that you really want to write about and frame your memoir appropriately. Writing your personal story will take time and dedication, so it's important that it's something you really want to write about.
