Finding inspiration from the past can be the trigger to write a biography.
Sometimes we discover a person from the past, sometimes from a by gone era, that inspires us. That inspiration can lead a writer on a quest to writer a biography. Chosing a SubjectA writer needs inspiration to put in the long hours and hard work that it takes to produce a book. And a biography is no different. If a writer isn't excited about the subject then it's not very likely that his or her reader will be either. Much of a biography's success will come down to the writer's ability to convey to the reader why they are so fascinated by this person. Finding Inspiration for a BiographyPerhaps it is a person that has a writer encaptured but sometimes inspiration can come from very unlikely sources. Some historical writers have an interest in a time period and begin by researching the person and looking for interesting people from that era. Sometimes it is very well known people, such as famous politicians, royalty, celebrities of their time, or heroes , that provide the source of a biography. Some authors look for lesser known characters. Interesting lives can be found in many places and don't just belong to the well-known and famous. While some might say writing about a well known person is more likely to sell, it is also likely that many biographies have already been written about that person, so any new biographies will need to reveal new and interesting details, or written from a new perspective, to be of interest. Researching Historical BiographyHistorical biographies have the added difficulty in that, if the person is from long ago, it is unlikely that anyone is around today who knew them personally. Therefore, this historical writer, is highly dependent on any recorded information on this person. An historical biographer will typically do a lot of research before they begin to write the biography. This may include reading accounts of the person's life as well as any material the person themselves may have written. Many successful biographies have been based on discovering some rare and previously unknown fact about a persons life. Uncovering such a nugget of information is a like finding gold for a biography writer. Biography Fact or Fiction?Ascertaining what is fact and what is fiction can be difficult when writing about people and events in the past. It may be that there are many versions in existence and it's impossible to determine the real truth. An important decision a biography writer will have to make is deciding whether to allow their voice and opinion to come through in the biography. Will they allow themselves to pass judgement on the person, or will they simple write the facts as known. Writing about an historical person can be an inspiring and fascinating biography subject. Getting to know someone who no longer lives can have it challenges, however so long as the writer isn't shy of conducting plenty of research, the end result can be very rewarding, both for the writer and reader.
